Purpose statement

The K-5 Literacy Instructional Coach leads the development of high quality/effective literacy instruction in all kindergarten through 5th grade classrooms. This includes observing and coaching teachers to improve lesson planning (using Wonders in K-3 + EL Modules/Lucy Calkins in 4/5), teaching practice, small-group/guided reading instruction, use of data, and ongoing assessments. The Literacy Coach uses data to provide analysis of school-wide trends in instruction and make recommendations for next steps to address areas of need for all learners. 

  • Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
    • Meets regularly with the Director of Academic Programming & Multilingual Education to review school-wide literacy data, establish goals, and plan for next steps.
    • Provides effective professional development opportunities for teachers throughout the school year.
    • Serves as a resource in identifying appropriate instructional strategies and interventions to improve student achievement.
    • Develops teachers’ capacity through all aspects of teaching and learning (assess, evaluate, plan + teach).
    • Supports classroom teachers with identifying effective literacy interventions for Tier 2 and Tier 3 students in a variety of grade levels.
    • Supports the identification and planning of instructional strategies that support multilingual learners. 
    • Develops teachers’ capacity to collect and analyze multiple sources of data to improve student learning.
    • Provide professional, clear and direct feedback to teachers. 
    • Maintains the confidentiality of the school, teachers, and classrooms.
    • Performs other duties as assigned based on the best interest of students.
    • Support and implement school, district, state, and federal initiatives, i.e., READ Act.
    • Coaches teachers on best practices in literacy and identified curriculum (demo/model, co-plan, co-teach, etc.)

Qualifications

  • Successful teaching experience in an urban, diverse setting preferred 
  • Must have a Colorado State license or a BA and a passing score on the Praxis or PLACE exam in Elementary Education.
  • Skills and Qualifications
    • Bachelor’s degree in education required
    • Teaching license required
    • Teaching experience 5+ years required
    • Master’s degree in reading or endorsement in early literacy preferred 
    • “Building a Strong Foundation: Developing Early Literacy Skills” CDE course completion preferred
    • Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Education Endorsement preferred 
    • Strong literacy training and experience supporting in systematic intervention 
    • Past experience leading and coaching teachers in a school environment 
    • Proven ability to differentiate/adapt curriculum to meet individual student needs
    • Outstanding written and oral communication skills
    • Proactive problem solver who demonstrates initiative and teamwork
    • Strong feedback and facilitation skills
