Summary: The EMS Control Specialist is responsible for evaluation, repair, installation, re-commissioning, and maintaining of computer automated systems for the energy management control of the equipment and systems associated with building mechanical and lighting needs. is in contact with outside mechanical contractors, internal engineering staff, school Administrators and other CMS staff on a daily basis. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedure and policies of the work unit. EMS Control Specialist must have above average skills and knowledge to competently perform work on old outdated/obsolete as well as new cutting-edge equipment and systems.

Under the direction of the Energy Manager, performs highly skilled work in the ongoing operational improvements necessary for the effective and efficient operation of Energy Management Systems (EMS). EMS facilitate the remote-automated computer control and monitoring of the operation of equipment and systems related to commercial heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and related lighting and electrical loads. The scope covers DDC and Pneumatic BAS controls of district wide mechanical and electrical equipment and systems in 600+ buildings and 1100+ Mobile Classrooms.

Essential Duties:
  • Respond to Operational Emergencies related to EMS Control of building mechanical and lighting equipment and systems as required; troubleshoot issues to determine causes and implement solutions.
  • Calibrate, repair or replace and recommission EMS and/or pneumatic controls including electronic, and/or pneumatic or electric.
  • Assist in solving difficult and specialized technical control system problems.
  • Maintain/repair and operate the school system energy management equipment.
  • Operate, care for, and maintain a variety of equipment and tools used in the performance of repair and maintenance tasks.
  • Troubleshoot; plan and layout work; estimate labor and material costs.
  • Assist when requested in the selection of renovation sites and/or equipment replacement; maintain records on your activity related to control systems and service of equipment.
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety standards.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:

Minimum
  • High school graduate or equivalent with extensive technical training
  • Study of electronics and control systems technology.
  • 7 years of work experience with DDC Energy Management Systems (EMS).
  • Diploma or Associates degree in HVAC technology / DDC control systems and experience with pneumatic and minimum of 2 different non-proprietary DDC vendors
  • Experience with FDD strategies and implementation.
  • Three (3) to Five (5) years of responsible and highly technical experience in commercial HVAC systems and/or control systems (DDC / pneumatic)

Desirable
  • Diploma or Associates degree in HVAC technology / DDC control systems.
  • PLC training
  • Experience with more-than-two non-proprietary DDC vendors
  • Five (5) Years of Experience with multiple FDD strategies, deployment, and continuous commissioning.
  • Key skills for becoming a certified control systems technician, including strong written and verbal communication skills, ability to identify colors, problem-solving skills, troubleshooting skills and expertise in electronic equipment, programmable logic controllers, supervisory control and data acquisition systems.

Licensing / Certification Requirements:
  • One or more of relevant specialty areas
  • Voluntary CCST (certified control systems technician) credential issued by the International Society of Automation (ISA).
  • DDC and Energy Management Certifications
  • Control Vendor training certifications.
  • Possess a valid North Carolina Driver's license

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities:
  • Knowledge of North Carolina State Code
  • Knowledge of approved electrical methods, practices, code requirements and safety standards.
  • Knowledge of pertinent building and construction codes and regulations.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade, including safe practices and procedures of the trade.
  • Knowledge of Energy Conservation Concepts, Strategies, and Auditing.
  • Wide range of refrigeration, heating, ventilation and air conditioning equipment/systems including 2- & 4-pipe hydronic systems utilizing chillers, boilers, AHU's, VAV's, etc.
  • Knowledge of procedure and proper use of tools, techniques, strategies, and equipment used in diagnostics, troubleshooting, repairing, and maintenance of DDC and Pneumatic Computer Automated Control Systems and Equipment.
  • Knowledge of principles and procedures of record keeping.
  • Ability to perform installation, maintenance and repair on a wide range of control systems (DDC / pneumatic).
  • Ability to read and interpret technical diagrams, blueprints, plans, specifications, and DDC Programming Logic.
  • Ability to estimate labor and materials costs needed for BAS system repairs or upgrades.
  • Ability to lift heavy objects and perform manual labor.
  • Ability to work effectively under emergency and hazardous situations.
  • Ability to maintain a variety of records relative to control system repair and maintenance.
  • Ability to work effectively in the absence of supervision.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted during the course of work.
