Augusta County is located in the central part of the scenic Shenandoah Valley of Virginia - 150 miles southwest of Washington, D.C.; 100 miles west of Richmond; and 90 miles north of Roanoke. The population of the County is approximately 73,000. Two independent cities, Staunton and Waynesboro, are located in Augusta County, yielding a total population of over 120,000 people.

There are eleven elementary schools, four middle schools, and five secondary schools in Augusta County with a total enrollment of approximately 11,000 pupils. Currently the division employs approximately 880 teachers.

Augusta County is ideally located for individuals who wish to further their education. The University of Virginia and James Madison University are located nearby. Graduate, undergraduate, and noncredit courses are offered by university extension programs in the county. Colleges within 30 miles proximity include:
