As a School Nutrition Assistant, you will support the School Nutrition Lead in the daily operations of the cafeteria and contribute to ensuring that students receive healthy, appealing meals in a safe and supportive environment. In addition to preparing, portioning, and serving food, you will assist with overseeing kitchen workflows, monitoring food safety and sanitation practices, and maintaining inventory and supply levels. This role requires attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and the ability to provide guidance to team members when needed. By working closely with the School Nutrition Lead, you will help create a positive dining experience for students and staff, while supporting the smooth and efficient functioning of the school nutrition program.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Performs daily duties to include preparing food items, washing, chopping, mixing, cooking, and assembling of recipe items.
  • Assists the Nutrition Lead in delegating tasks/assignments to Nutrition Workers
  • Ensure compliance with food safety and hygiene regulations
  • Maintain cleanliness and sanitation standards in the cafeteria, kitchen, and serving areas
  • Monitor food inventory and order supplies as needed
  • Engages in cafeteria and/or classroom taste tests to introduce new menu items.
  • Provide excellent customer service to students and staff
  • Attends scheduled staff/faculty meetings.
  • Perform administrative tasks, such as record-keeping and reporting.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Preferred: Previous experience in food service, with a minimum of 2-4 years in a school cafeteria setting
  • Preferred: ServSafe Food Handler certification or equivalent
  • Preferred: High school diploma or equivalent

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Lifting/carrying up to 40 lbs.; pushing/pulling objects

  • Standing, sitting, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crawling, balancing

  • Possible exposure to heat, cold, noise, dust, fumes, or hazardous materials

  • Work at heights or around electrical/mechanical equipment

  • Basic sense of touch, smell, and taste
  • Works independently and collaboratively with regular face-to-face interaction

EMPLOYMENT BENEFITS/TERMS:

  • SALARY: As per the Master agreement between the Burlington Board of School Commissioners and the Burlington Education Association. This is a hourly position paid Bi-Weekly
  • BENEFITS: Benefits eligible on start date. 30 days to enroll in coverage from start day. BSD Benefits!
  • PAID TIME: CTO As per the Master Agreement
