Summary: This position will develop and monitor system-wide initiatives to improve school health, physical education and physical activity programs. This includes providing leadership in supporting school administrators and classroom teachers how to implement the North Carolina Healthy Active Children's Policy. The Health and PE Specialist will provide on-going staff development and support for over 400 health and physical education teachers on instructional best practices and state mandates in the K-12 healthful living essential standards.

Essential Duties:

Develop reproductive health and safety education instructional materials and forms to ensure district compliance with NC House Bill 88 ("Healthy Youth Act").

Develop and communicate instructional materials to ensure district compliance with NC Healthy Active Children's Policy.

Develop and communicate instructional materials to ensure compliance with district's health education (IHAM) policy.

Coordinate projects with central office physical education/health resource teachers to ensure efforts are aligned with district's strategic plan.

Develop and maintain community partnerships to further joint projects related to healthy, active children.

Develop, coordinate, and provide system-wide staff development for all K-12 health and physical education teachers in the district supporting the NC Healthy Living essential standards.

Assist school leaders and teachers in the interpretation and implementation of the North Carolina Healthy Active Children's Policy.

Collaborate with school leaders and classroom teachers on how to implement the Healthy Active Children's Policy.

Serve on School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) monitoring, reviewing, and revising district wellness policy.

Collaborate with other departments providing staff development and training supporting the district's strategic plan.

Provide ongoing support to schools on adherence to the district wellness policy.

Monitor and report district implementation of the Healthy Active Children's Policy to the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.

Provide ongoing assistance to schools in the interpretation of student data to identify appropriate research-based interventions for academics and behavior.

Analyze, interpret, and report district student fitness test results.

Develop district protocols to assist school administrators, counselors and health teachers meeting the NC CPR graduation requirement.

Monitor and make district budget decisions to support health, physical education and physical activity programs.

Serve on committees related to district initiatives in health, physical education and physical activity.

Attend regional and state healthful living meetings as required by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.

Assist teachers in selecting, locating and securing instructional materials and resources supporting health and physical education programs.

Assist teachers in securing classroom resources to provide indoor and outdoor physical activity opportunities for students.

Provide ongoing assistance on teacher effectiveness evaluation for health and physical education teachers.

Collaborate with district communications department promoting exemplary instructional practices and health and physical education programs.

Collaborate with Virtual Learning department providing online credit options in health and physical education.

Works with grant programs related to health, physical education, and physical activity

Performs related duties as assigned.
