POSTION PURPOSE:

Under the supervision and leadership of the Principal, the Dean of Student Support Services (SSS) has primary responsibilities to plan, coordinate and support all students, and in particular students with disabilities (special education and Section 504), newcomers, English Learners and Long Term English Learners (LTEL), pursuant to District policy and state and federal regulations. Integral to that work, the Dean is also responsible for promoting the District's commitment to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI).

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  1. Credential: Valid Administrative Services Credential, Master's degree and one of the following:  A Valid teaching credential, Pupil Personnel Services credential, or Education Specialists credential

Experience:

  1. Five (5) years of successful teaching, school psychology or administrative experience at the secondary (6th-12th grades) level.
  2. Two (2) of the five (5) years with a focus on teaching special education, or providing direct services to students in special education as a related service provider, or administrative oversight of special education services and implementation on a school campus.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

  1. Maintains knowledge of current laws and legislation pertaining to Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Section 504 and other state and federal regulations that define school district responsibilities for students with special education, Section 504, newcomers, English Learners and LTEL.
  2. Participates in programs and activities that promote diversity, equity and inclusion.
  3. Leads and performs consistent with current laws and legislation pertaining to IDEA, Section 504 and other state and federal regulations that define school district responsibilities for students with special education, Section 504, foster/homeless and newcomers.
  4. Serves as on site resource for all special education staff, including special education teachers, para-educators and related service providers.
  5. Co-supervises (with site Principal) fulfillment of child-find obligations and delivery of legally mandated services defined in a student's Individual Education Plan (IEP) and Section 504 plan.
  6. Supports transition from 5th grade to 6th grade with students with an IEP, English Learners, foster and homeless students.
  7. Leads staff to ensure quality and effective services are provided to students and assures students with an IEP have full educational opportunity in the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE)
  8. Assists in the coordination of adjunct services for students with an IEP and/or Section 504, such as transportation, classroom facilities, nursing, assistive technology, etc.
  9. Consults and collaborates with parents/guardians of students with an IEP, Section 504 plan, newcomers, English Learners and foster/homeless. Works to build trusting relationships with parents and community stakeholders.
  10. Conducts, facilitates and models best practices of leading IEP meetings.
  11. Attends necessary job-related conferences and meetings held by County, State and other agencies or departments.
  12. Assists in planning and coordinating staff development activities for site special education staff.
  13. Assists in the planning and coordinating of professional development for integrated and designated ELD.
  14. Monitors the performance of all students, and in particular, students with disabilities (special education and Section 504), newcomers, English Learners, and foster/homeless.
  15. Participates in the English Learner Advisory Committee, supporting in the development of a needs assessment for English Learners and making recommendations to School Site Council on the development of the SPSA.
  16. Supervises and monitors the implementation of core curriculum in special education classes.
  17. Supervises and evaluates assigned certificated and classified personnel.
  18. Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned, with the exception of being assigned to supervision of co-curricular activities beyond the school day.
